TWENTIETH CENTURY CITY started as a (back to) school digital "movie" project in 2003. The images languished on a Zip disk until this blog came into existence. A blog was the cheapest way for me to bring joy to the masses with this imagery.

Cornerstones were my preferred subject but to cover years of war and depression/recession when building was scarce I had to use gravestones. There's one each of a licence plate and a price tag and a storm sewer or two. Churches and schools were common sources of cornerstone years and street addresses filled in the rest. 1907, 1922 and 1927 were great years to be in the building trades in Toronto it would seem. Everywhere I go since starting this project I spot new years.

The idea was to gather the century together, literally, from the surface of a city which was indelibly shaped by the economic and social forces of that century.

Enjoy, comment and keep an eye peeled for twentieth century city!

ps: if you know where there's a 1946 let me know
